Things to consider before owning a hyacinth macaw.

1. Are your living arrangements conducive to owning a hyacinth macaw? They can be very loud and require quite a bit of space so an apartment situation, for example, may not be a good idea.
2. Do you have other types of pets? Will they be compatible and safe for your hyacinth macaw to be around? Hunting dogs or cats can sometimes pose a threat to parrots. It is wise to give careful consideration to your present pet situation before adding a new pet parrot.
3. Do you have other birds? It is recommended to keep new birds separate from other parrots in the household for a minimum of 45 days and to be sure all parrots are healthy prior to allowing them in the same environment together.
4. Do you live with children? If yes you will want to educate the children about this exciting new addition to the family. Perhaps make it a family project incorporating fun and games into the learning process.
5. Is your home parrot safe? Make certain you do the necessary research regarding any potential dangers such as toxins that might be present in your home.
6. Do you have time for a hyacinth macaw? Although they are perfectly capable of entertaining themselves throughout the day they need attention and love. They are flock animals and will look to you and others in their environment as their new flock.
7. Do you have an avian veterinarian available? It is important to locate one in advance. Set up an appointment to interview him/her to determine the extent of their experience. A veterinarian does not necessarily have to be avian certified to be competent with parrots but they should have a fair amount of experience with larger parrot breeds. Get local references and check them. The last thing you want is your baby being traumatized by a well meaning but inexperienced veterinarian and his/her untrained technicians.
